Skills Assessment vs Visa Eligibility: Why Being on an Occupation List Is Not Enough

Many skilled migrants believe that if their occupation is on an Australian skilled occupation list, they are eligible for a visa.

This is one of the most common misunderstandings in skilled migration.

Home Affairs explains that the skilled occupation list summarises occupations Australia needs to fill shortages and also identifies assessing authorities for skills assessments.

But appearing on a list is only one part of the process.

What Is a Skills Assessment?

A skills assessment is an evaluation by the relevant assessing authority to check whether your qualifications and/or employment experience match the nominated occupation.

Each occupation may have a different assessing authority and different requirements.

Occupation List Does Not Equal Visa Grant

Even if your occupation appears on a skilled list, you may still need:

  • Suitable skills assessment
  • Required points
  • English score
  • Age eligibility
  • Relevant work experience
  • State nomination, if applicable
  • Invitation through SkillSelect
  • Health and character clearance
  • Correct documents

Why Applicants Get Confused

Applicants often search an occupation list and stop there. But the real question is not only, “Is my occupation listed?”

The stronger questions are:

  • Can I prove my skills?
  • Does my education match?
  • Does my work experience count?
  • Can I get a positive skills assessment?
  • Which visa subclass fits my profile?
  • Do I have enough points?
  • Is state nomination realistic?

Example

A person may work as a marketing professional. The occupation may appear in some context, but the applicant still needs to prove that their duties, qualification and employment records match the nominated occupation.

If the evidence is weak, the visa strategy becomes weak.

What Documents Matter?

Useful documents may include:

  • Degree certificates
  • Transcripts
  • Employment reference letters
  • Payslips
  • Tax documents
  • Job descriptions
  • Organisation charts
  • Project evidence
  • Registration or licence, if applicable

Final Word

Skilled migration is not a keyword search. It is an evidence-based assessment of occupation, skills, points, documents and visa rules.
